Language Acquisition (L1)

 <Introduction>

Language acquisition is one of the greatest biological accomplishments as human-beings, amazing ability to represent actions, objects, feelings and ideas in order to understand one-another. It usually refers to Mother’s tongue, which studies infants' acquisition of their native language. "[T]he rate of new-word learning is not constant but ever increasing. Thus between the ages of 1 and 2 years, most children will learn less than one word a day (Fenson et al., 1994), whilst a 17-year-old will learn about 10,000 new words per year, mostly from reading (Nagy and Herman, 1987).・・・”. <Mother Tongue Acquisition>

Our mother tongue is Japanese, we internalize the rule of Japanese to speak or listen before we enter an elementary school. We don’t make a conscious learning, through a communication, and using language, We internalize First Language Acquisition.

   <How Children Acquire Intonation in their Mother Tongue>

  "This feeling is reinforced by [an]other feature of language . . .: intonation.
  Intonation is the melody or music of language. It refers to the way the voice rises and falls as we speak."
(David Crystal, A Little Book of Language. Yale Univ. Press, 2010)
·         "Vocabulary and grammar grow hand in hand; as toddlers learn more words, they use them in combination to express more complex ideas. The kinds of objects and relationships that are central to daily life influence the content and complexity of a child's early language."
(Barbara M. Newman and Philip R. Newman, Development Through Life: A Psychosocial Approach, 10th ed. Wadsworth, 2009)

※What is Second Language Acquisition....?

The second language acquisition is process where people learn second language form. The second language acquisition mentions scientific rules developed process. The second language mentions any language learning in addition to the first language of the person.

  <Chomsky's theory>

 Noam Chomsky id the one of the famous linguistics in the world. He took out various findings in the world. According to his website,
He claims that certain linguistic structures which children use so accurately must be already important on the child's mind. And he insisted that every child had LAD which coded a language and a main principle of the structure of the grammar in their brain of "a language acquisition devise" or the child.When they learn new vocabulary and apply the syntactic structures, they use LAD to from sentence. However a language spoken around them is very irregular, Chomsky points out that probably independent, so a child was not able to learn a language through an imitation. The speech of adult is often taken to pieces and sometimes non-grammatical. "Chomsky's theory applies to all languages as they all contain nouns, verbs, consonants and vowels and children appear to be 'hard-wired' to acquire the grammar. Every language is extremely complex, often with subtle distinctions which even native speakers are unaware of. However all children, regardless of their intellectual ability, become fluent in their native language within five or six years."

<Question>

*According Chomsky, what will tell to become important about the mind of the child in linguistics?
